After being named a "One Man Band To Watch in 2010" by Indie Rock Cafe, multi-instrumentalist ALEX WALKER has yet again bent and abused the boundaries of a musical genre with his latest free release, "Gotta Lose" (Lapdance Academy).
Combining the groove-heavy bass-lines and horn stabs of classic Sly Stone 1970s soul with the "hurry-up" vocal style popularized by Atlanta MCs like Big Boi and Andre 3000 - and dusted with Golden Era hip-hop, thanks to an appearance by Kobie Powell (of the seminal '90s rap group, Us3) and soul-singer Len Xiang - "Gotta Lose" is THE feel-good anthem for the final month of summer.
As the sun continues to bake the stoops of brownstone buildings all over Brooklyn, these three Fort Greene/Clinton-Hill artists remind us of the finer points of Summer: kicking back with a cold drink (or ten) to soak up the swagger and vibe of the City that Never Sleeps.
Like all Lapdance Academy releases, "Gotta Lose" is available for free download in high-quality MP3 format, but Walker has taken the Brooklyn label's business model a step further by releasing all of the vocal and instrumental stems on a Creative Commons License. This means that enterprising producers, remixers and mash-up artists are encouraged to download the raw audio files (a session for Apple's GarageBand is also available), re-imagine the track as they see fit and send it back to Lapdance Academy where select remixes will be given their own, unique cover-art and made available for download in the Lapdance Academy catalog.
